About Consulate General of Mexico in Nogales

In 1882 the section of the railway that joined both Nogales was built, this fact led the Government of Washington to decide to establish a commercial agency in the city of Nogales, Sonora.

The foregoing led to the fact that in the year 1885, the Government of Mexico also established a consular representation, its first Consul being Felipe Labadie. It is worth mentioning that at present 54 Consuls have held this position. Since that date, our country has permanently and constantly maintained a consular representation in the city of Nogales, Arizona.

During the revolutionary period, the Consulate had a very outstanding performance, since its reports served to prevent arms and ammunition trafficking. In the post-revolutionary era, the Consulate has dedicated itself to promoting the image of Mexico and defending the interests of its fellow citizens in a region that has become more important not only because of its proximity but also because of the intense commercial exchange.

Nogales' economy is based mainly on agricultural businesses and the distribution of products from Mexico. Despite its small population, Nogales receives a lot of income from its sister city, Nogales, Sonora; more than 60% of its excise taxes come from Mexican shoppers who cross the border daily. A large number of maquiladoras have established themselves in Nogales to take advantage of favorable wages and transportation and distribution networks. 93.59% of the population is Hispanic or Latino.

Since 1885, the Consulate has occupied different locations until the current one, starting on September 17, 2009.

From the state of Arizona the County of Santa Cruz, with the Sasabe Border Crossing, as well as the city of Green Valley in Pima County.

The particular district of this consular representation covers the county of Santa Cruz, which includes the populations of: Amado, Arivaca, Nogales, Patagonia, Río Rico, Sonoita, Elgin, Tubac and Tumacacori; in Pima County, the city of Green Valley and the border port of Sasabe.

With respect to the general circumscription, this comprises the counties of Cochise, Graham and Greenlee which are served by the consulate of Carrera in Douglas, Arizona. Santa Cruz County has an extension of 1,236 square miles.
