Mariachi de Uclatlán at the UCLA Herb Alpert School of Music in Los Angeles, CA represents a pioneering ensemble dedicated to the performance and preservation of traditional Mexican music, culture, and heritage. As the first mariachi ensemble of its kind to be established at an academic university, this distinguished organization has maintained its exceptional legacy since its informal founding in 1961 and formal establishment as a course of study in 1964.

Under the direction of Grammy-winning musical director Jesús "Chuy" Guzmán, Mariachi de Uclatlán delivers passionate musical excellence that has earned admiration around the world. The ensemble specializes in a comprehensive repertoire of authentic Mexican musical styles, including son jalisciense, son huasteco, bolero, ranchera, and huapango, representing various regions of Mexico. This specialized expertise in traditional Mexican musical performance distinguishes the ensemble as a leader in mariachi education and cultural preservation.

The ensemble features both UCLA graduate and undergraduate students from diverse academic backgrounds and fields across the university, creating a unique collaborative environment. Members benefit from world-class instruction and mentorship that combines rigorous musical training with deep cultural understanding. Mariachi de Uclatlán regularly performs at major venues and cultural events throughout Los Angeles and internationally, having recently undertaken performances in Japan and collaborated with renowned artists including Mariachi Los Camperos and notable cultural figures.
