About Permanent Mission of Spain to the United Nations
The main function of the Permanent Representation of Spain to the United Nations in New York is to represent Spain and defend its interests in the #UNHQ
This function includes, among other issues:
-Assisting and participating actively in meetings and events of the Organization.
-Supervising the functioning of the Organization and the fulfillment of its goals.
-Defending the Spanish position in the meetings and activities of the Organization.
-Promoting the presence of Spanish officials in UN agencies.
On December 14, 1955, Spain entered the United Nations Organization. The entry of our country into this multilateral organization was, and continues to be, a fundamental milestone in Spanish foreign policy, since it allows Spain to be part of the only world forum where 193 States from all over the world are present and where they debate and negotiate general issues that affect us all, from climate change, human rights or migration, to name just a few; or where they try to reach solutions in conflicts around the world.
These decades together have served to reinforce Spain's commitment to the Principles and Purposes of the United Nations, contained in the Charter of San Francisco, and also to its values, in which we fully recognize ourselves today.
In this time, Spain and the United Nations have evolved and have also grown together, gradually consolidating a growing presence of our country in the Organization, which today has more than 1,500 Spanish professionals working in the United Nations in relevant positions.
