Vanderbilt Hispanic/Latinx Student Nurses Affinity Group

The Hispanic/Latinx Student Nurses Affinity Group (HLSNAG) at Vanderbilt University School of Nursing in Nashville, TN is dedicated to advancing culturally competent nursing care and addressing health disparities within the Hispanic/Latinx community. Operating as a comprehensive student organization, HLSNAG focuses on raising awareness about the cultural, social, and health aspects that impact Hispanic/Latinx populations, equipping nursing students and registered nurses with the knowledge and skills necessary to provide culturally appropriate care.

HLSNAG's primary objectives center on exploring and mitigating culturally related health needs through education and advocacy. The organization welcomes all nursing students and nurses who support the commitment to highlighting the health needs of all individuals, regardless of background. Members represent all levels of nursing at Vanderbilt University School of Nursing, including students pursuing Master's, Doctor of Nursing Practice, and PhD degrees, as well as both local and distance learning students.

The group functions as a vital resource of support and mentorship, guiding members through their professional journeys as registered nurses and advanced practice nurses. HLSNAG maintains active engagement with the broader nursing community through hybrid meetings scheduled monthly, accommodating both in-person and virtual participation based on student availability. The organization connects members with valuable professional resources, including the National Association of Hispanic Nurses (NAHN), fostering continued professional development and networking opportunities.

Since its establishment in 2018, HLSNAG has grown substantially as the Hispanic/Latinx nursing student population at Vanderbilt has expanded. Under the leadership of faculty advisor Dr. Shelza Rivas and dedicated student leaders, the organization has become an essential component of the learning experience for Hispanic/Latinx nursing students in Nashville, providing community, advocacy, and professional support.
